About the Maryland Rural Residency Program

Rural Residency Program Addresses Growing Shortage of Primary Care Providers in Maryland Communities

Choptank Community Health System and University of Maryland School of Medicine are proud to participate in the Rural Track of the Family and Community Residency. This residency’s funding has been awarded to expand this valuable resource to combat the Eastern Shore's physician shortage.  Through the grants from HRSA and the State of Maryland's funding, the reality of a Rural Family and Community Medicine Track is finally here.

"Choptank Community Health is proud to be a partner in this groundbreaking grant award from the Health Resources and Services Administration.  We commend the University of Maryland's School of Medicine's commitment to enhancing access to care for our communities through the development of a rural training track on the Eastern Shore," says Sara Rich, CEO of CCHS.  "We look forward to collaborating with our partners of UMSOM, UM Shore Regional Health, and the Eastern Shore Area Health Education Center as we work together to bring more primary care physicians to our rural communities."

The goal of the UMSOM program is to develop a sustainable, accredited rural training track in Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's, and Talbot counties on Maryland's Eastern Shore, and to ultimately expand the area's rural primary care workforce.  The HRSA and the State of Maryland will be used to help recruit and train dedicated teaching faculty for the program, to recruit a diverse pool of primary care residency applications that reflect a demonstrable interest and dedication to the practice of rural health, and to develop and secure a clear and viable plan to sustain the rural residency program.

Residents spend their first year in Baltimore completing much of their hospital inpatient learning and then transition to the Eastern Shore working side by side with our physician faculty.

During their two years working in the offices of Choptank Community Health System, they will engage in meaningful hands-on experiences as well as become immersed in our communities. Residents will be an integral part of the future of healthcare on the Eastern Shore.
